About Me

Hampshire, United Kingdom
In July 2010 I graduated from KLC School of Design in London with a Professional Diploma in Interior Design (please see the tabs below for course details and project portfolios). Since September 2010 I've been working for a local interior design practice just outside Alton in Hampshire. Through this blog, I hope to share with you products which I like and things which inspire me - together with the odd post about my own home which is a working project. A good home is never finished!

PORTFOLIO 4

NASH HOUSE, Lymington, New Forest, Hampshire
Final Project with no budget restrictions

Nash House - Exterior Elevation

The Brief
A new build modernist house to be designed in our preferred style.  Whilst we had free reign as to the location and 'client', the client brief had to be very realistic in the provisions made for the client and their day to day living requirements.  Planning solutions were required for the entire ground floor including detailed planning for the kitchen, together with a lighting plan for this area.  In addition, fully considered schemes were required for the kitchen and two reception spaces of our choice.  The property has underfloor heating throughout the ground floor.  All drawings for this project were completed using VectorWorks.  The project was presented to the Principal of the college, tutors and course colleagues.

The rooms designed were as follows:

- Kitchen
- Family Room
- Dining Room / Library

Ground Floor Planning

Showing the planning for the whole of the ground floor; the 3 rooms for which I designed schemes are shown  in more detail below.

Kitchen / Dining Area
Detailed planning process for the kitchen

I spent a long time planning the kitchen (a very long time planning the kitchen in fact!).

Taking into consideration the require-
ments of 'the client', the considerable
size of the kitchen (it was huge!), and
the working triangle.

Looking at finishes - initially all the units, including the island, were maple but when quickly rendering my sketch I decided that there was too much of the same colour (especially as it's such a big room).  I experimented with the different colours which were in my concept and decided that this rich purple was the most striking!

I included a pet sleeping area under the green bench seating!

Measured one point perspective
The island was designed to make the large space more workable and to provide an area where friends and family can socialise with the client whilst the client is cooking, with further soft seating under the window opposite the hob (the hob is on the island).  The Kitchen / Dining area has a tiled floor for practicality and because tiles are best for conducting heat with underfloor heating.

Lighting Plan

A flexible lighting scheme was designed combining general, task and decorative lighting.

Family Room
Development sketch

In this room, which was off the dining end of the Kitchen, two distinct areas were required by the client; a quiet seating area and an area where teenage children could gather around a TV / PC.

Bespoke shelving was designed for this room in the alcove.  The client also wanted this room to feel connected to the Kitchen / Diner and the same wallpaper was chosen for the fireplace wall in this room as in the Kitchen / Diner.  A tunnel
fireplace also linked the two rooms.  I chose carpet in here suitable for use with underfloor heating.

Dining Room / Library
Development sketch
Rendered one point perspective sketch looking at the Dining Room and Library beyond.  Bespoke cabinetry was designed to provide ample storage in the Dining Room and a raised floor to the Library had the effect of slightly separating it from the Dining Room.  Bespoke shelving was designed for books etc in the Library area.

Floor plan
Not all flooring is suitable for use with underfloor heating (for a variety of reasons depending on the nature of the flooring).
I wanted to use wood flooring in the Dining Room but also wanted warmth.  I therefore decided to let the carpet into the wood which also provided a contrast in materials.  Special wood flooring was selected for use with underfloor heating.  In the Library I chose leather flooring.
